What's New?

October 27, 2003

I just did an author interview for Romantic Times Magazine. It will be appearing in the January 2004 issue to coincide with the release of SEEN BY MOONLIGHT (I also had a new photo taken.  If you're interested in that kind of stuff, scroll down to the bio section on this page or click here.photo

The second book in the Kincaid family saga, SEEN BY MOONLIGHT, will be released by Avon in January 2004. (on sale date December 28, 2003)

My debut book, THE NIGHTINGALE'S SONG won the HOLT Medallion for Best Long Historical and the Golden Quill for Best First Book.  It was also a RITA Finalist in the First Book category and a finalist in the Readers Choice Awards and the Dorothy Parker Award of Excellence.

The Nightingale's Song has been released in a Norwegian edition.

Personally, this has been a difficult year--a death in the immediate family, a bout of pneumonia last winter, and in the spring, a diagnosis of breast cancer.  My variety of cancer is curable; I mention it here only to remind all the ladies that mammograms save lives.  If you haven't had a recent mammogram, please, make an appointment today.

Biography

Kathleen Eschenburg has held such various jobs as physical education teacher and the owner of a small resort in Belize.  Since childhood she has loved stories and story-telling, though she never suspected she would be a writer until one day she sat in front of her computer to see if she could write a book.  She lives in Maryland.

Well...  Incredibly boring--except for that bit about a resort in Belize--but that's in the nature of a normal life revolving around the needs of a large family.  And that's what I was and how I defined myself for the longest time; I was a wife and mother.  If that urge to write lurked somewhere beneath the surface then it was lurking so deeply I wasn't even aware of it.  I was among that multitude of folks who comment every now and then, "I'm going to write a book someday," without the slightest intention of ever sitting down and actually doing the hard work involved.  Who had time?  Not me.  And I was happy with my normal life: a husband, four children and six  hectic months of catering to tourists at our motel on Maryland's Eastern Shore followed by the quiet winters away from the motel when we traveled ourselves or simply built a fire in the fireplace at home and curled up with a good book.  There was no need to redefine myself.

But no one can know the future.  One day, I sat in a doctor's office with my husband and listened to the grim news.  An intense year passed, and when it was over ... well, it was time to pick up the pieces and start over again.  Which explains that resort in Belize.  A few years into that enterprise, I sat down in front of my computer to design a spring sales brochure, and opened the word processing program instead.

I wrote a book.

Why?  I don't know.

But writing it was many things: exhilarating, exasperating, incredibly fulfilling.  So I wrote another.

My family is still large, and they love bragging about their mom--the writer.  I love hearing them brag.  Mostly though, I love writing fiction.

PS: That picture was taken before my hair fell out.  If I can figure out how to work the digital camera, I'll upload a new shot of me with my nifty-gypsy 'do.

Well, I sort of promised, but I still haven't figured out the digital camera works--probably because it is usually in my daughter's possession.  However, the opportunity came up for a magazine interview, and they wanted a recent photo ... and I saw the opportunity to promote some breast cancer awareness along with my books.  Anyway, here's the picture of the bald me sporting my favorite ball cap.

That cap was a gift from a writing buddy in the Compuserve Writers Forum.  She works for the production company that put on the Oscar ceremony and sent me her souvenir cap sporting the 75th Oscar Award logo.  She's also a breast cancer survivor.  Here's to friendship!

Newsletter

Okay, I'm not web-savvy enough to design a newsletter subscription list.  Until that day comes, my publisher, HarperCollins/Avon, maintains a unique web tool called AuthorTracker that notifies you whenever your favorite authors come out with new books, go on tour, and more.

It's easy, private, and informative. Your e-mail address will be used only to send you information about the author(s) selected, in this case Kathleen Eschenburg, and for no other purpose. If you sign up for my AuthorTracker you will receive an e-mail notifying you when my new books are published. The first email will be sent two weeks before the book goes on sale and the second email on the on-sale date. This notification should only happen once a year, but could be more often if more of my books are published or reissued. Over time additional information related to me and my novels may be made available, such as any book tour dates and special promotions for fans. You may unsubscribe at any time.

Thank You
